Biography
Today it is `Mamta Kulkarni who? ` But, when she was active, no magazine could do without having some outrageous quote or a bold, sexy photograph of the girl with a sexy body and innocent face.
The first time she became the cynosure of sorts was not for any of her film performances but for briefly titillating the film-crazy public by daring to go topless for a gossip magazine cover. The cover opened the floodgates of opportunities to her and she came to be known as the most explosive sex bomb around. "After the cover, the widespread acclaim and applause I got is simply unimaginable," she states proudly. "I don't think any actress must have got that kind of attention. Madhuri Dixit, who is a senior actress didn't get the kind of attention and standing ovation I got at a premiere recently. I don't mean to boast but that is what 'that' one picture has done."
That `one picture`, besides having gained her recognition has also gained her the tag of being a fast girl. "In that case what have they called Padmini Kolhapure, Zeenat Aman, Simi Garewal, Deepa Sahi, Mandakini and so many others. When a Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Julia Roberts, Demi Moore do it, it's a 'Wow, what picture!'. It's just some people who are jealous of your success and fame who talk crudely about you. If I've to just open my mouth and talk about the so-called puritanical attitude of most of the actresses here, your ears will fall off."
According to Mamta, girls in this industry are responsible for getting themselves their cheap images. "They have no dignity whatsoever. They stoop to any level to get films. Today, I can proudly say that I'm a virgin and yet I'm at the top." Even as her boldness helped her transcend an array of B-grade line-ups, producers chose her for their films for her professionalism and great commitment. And with films like Rakesh Roshan's, 'Karan Arjun' and 'Baazi' opposite Aamir Khan, she has constantly managed to stay in the top bracket. However she seems to have a knack of getting involved in controversies with most of her co-stars. Whether Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan or Bobby Deol. "My problem with Akshay started because of that idiotic, 'Akshay turned me on' quote. I don't want to repeat myself, but I was misquoted. Even the Bobby Deol episode was blown out of proportion. With me, what happens usually is that, if I say something complimentary about a hero, I'm supposed to be having an affair with him. Like it happened in Aamir's case. Otherwise, it's the other extreme like it happened with Sunil Shetty and me. It's really sickening."
Her future seemed bright as she was working with directors like Raj Kumar Santoshi, Mahesh Bhatt and J.P Dutta. She even said things like, "I have become extra serious about my work. I am being very selective about my films. I don't mind doing two-three films a year. Later, I may cut down to one film a year. I just might dabble in production. All in all, I have no regrets about anything that has happened in my life so far."
But mysteriously, she has disappeared from the public eye after her `marriage`.
